Heading Down Cape & the Islands
There is much to explore between Bourne and the end of the Cape in Provincetown. Not to mention the two islands, Nantucket & Martha’s Vineyard that complete your visit to Cape Cod.
Strolling the Main Street in Falmouth you’ll find quaint shops with Cape Cod trinkets, or that vacation t-shirt you’ve been meaning to pick up. Plus, several great restaurants with outdoor seating. It’s a great place to stop after a visit to Nobska Lighthouse.
Dating back to 1829 this lighthouse has been a noted Cape Cod landmark. The Coast Guard had used it for 20+ years to house their local Commander, but in 2017 turned it over to the Town of Falmouth who are turning it into a museum. Guided tours of the property are available
Bartholomew Gosnold made landfall here in 1602, and the pilgrims on the Mayflower landed in this harbor in 1620. Rich in history but known for local artists, Whale watching, and an LBGTQ friendly community. You’ll find a lot of interesting shops to explore, and places to grab a bite to eat with a view. Being at the very tip of Cape Cod, plan on beach traffic and about an hour drive from On the Rocks.
To get to the Island you’ll need to grab a ferry from Woods Hole or Hyannis. MV has 5 towns to explore and they all have their own unique features. There is a car ferry if you want to explore beyond the towns where the ferries land.
The direct ferry to this island is from Hyannis, but you could hop over from Martha’s Vineyard. You can explore the historic town on foot, just plan on 2 hours there and back to the main land if you don’t take the express ferry.
The old Boston & Sandwich Glass Company facility was once the cornerstone of the glass blowing and pressing industries. It was preserved by the Sandwich Historical Society and is now a museum. Visitors have said the museum offered more interesting and hands on activities than they had anticipated and is well worth the visit. While in Sandwich, you should also explore the Sandwich Boardwalk and see what Cape Cod Bay waters have to offer.
